new storage modules in a project called “Electromobility Fleet Test

The pilot project was launched by Volkswagen and Germany’s Federal Ministry for the Environment BMU together with seven other partners. The Fraunhofer Institutes for Silicon Technology ISIT in Itzehoe, Integrated Circuits IIS in Nuremberg, Dell Vostro 1510 Battery, and Integrated Systems and Device Technology IISB in Erlangen will be pooling their expertise for the next three years IBM ThinkPad R60 Battery. The researchers are developing an energy storage module based on lithium-polymer accumulator technology that is suitable for use in vehicles.

The tasks involved are distributed between the three Fraunhofer Institutes according to their skills: The ISIT experts, who have long experience in developing and manufacturing lithium accumulators, are manufacturing the cells. Their colleagues at IIS are responsible for battery management and monitoring. The scientists from IISB are contributing their know-how on power electronics components to configure the accumulator modules IBM ThinkPad T60 Battery. The development and configuration of the new energy storage module is expected to be finished by mid-2010. Volkswagen AG – the industrial partner in this project – will then carry out field trials to test the modules’ suitability for everyday use in the vehicles.

Hybrid technology combines the advantages of combustion engines and electric motors.Dell Vostro 1510 Battery, Dell Winbook N4 Battery, Dell Winbook Z1 Battery, Scientists are developing high-performance energy storage units, a prerequisite for effective hybrid motors.

A specially developed battery management system makes the energy storage device more durable and reliable. The experts are also researching into new concepts that will enable large amounts of energy to be stored in a small space. To do this Lenovo ThinkPad X60 Tablet PC Series Battery, they integrate mechanical and electrical components in a single module, devising systems for temperature control, performance data registration and high-voltage safety.

The vehicle is powered by petroleum on the freeway and by electricity in town, thus using considerably less energy. Dell Winbook N4 Battery, A hybrid propulsion system switches over to generator operation when the brakes go on, producing electric current that is temporarily stored in a battery. The electric motor uses this current when starting up. This yields tremendous savings, particularly in urban traffic.

“This module has to be able to withstand the harsh environmental conditions it will encounter in a hybrid vehicle, and above all it must guarantee high operational reliability and a long service life Lenovo ThinkPad X61 Tablet PC Series Battery,” states ISIT scientist Dr. Gerold Neumann, who coordinates the Fraunhofer activities. The researchers hope to reach this goal with new electrode materials that are kinder to the environment.

But up to now, hybrid technology has always had a storage problem. Scientists from three Fraunhofer Institutes are developing new storage modules in a project called “Electromobility Fleet Test”.

older-generation nanoflowers were not suitable for electronic products of the future

In the new study, scientists first grew clusters of carbon nanotubes, strands of pure carbon 50,000 times thinner than a human hair, that are known to have superior electrical conductivity. The scientists then deposited manganese oxide onto the nanotubes using a simple, low-cost coating technique called “electrodeposition,” resulting in nano-sized clusters that resemble tiny dandelions under an electron microscope IBM ThinkPad R50 Battery. The result was a battery system with higher energy storage capacity, longer life, and greater efficiency than conventional battery materials,Dell Vostro 1510 Battery, Dell Winbook N4 Battery, Dell Winbook Z1 Battery, the researchers say.

These “nanoflowers” may power next-generation electronic devices, say the scientists in a report scheduled for the Oct. 8 issue of ACS’ Nano Letters, a monthly journal.

Want more power and longer battery life for that cell phone, laptop, and digital music player?Dell Winbook Z1 Battery, “Flower power” may be the solution IBM ThinkPad R51 Battery. Chemists are reporting development of flower-shaped nanoparticles with superior electronic performance than conventional battery materials.

Gaoping Cao and colleagues point out that nanoflowers are not new. Researchers have developed various types of flower-shaped nanoparticles using different materials, including manganese oxide, the key metallic ingredient that powers conventional batteries IBM ThinkPad R52 Battery. However, older-generation nanoflowers were not suitable for electronic products of the future, which will demand more power and longer battery life, the researchers say.

New Batteries at Long Last

Battery science has traditionally been the slowpoke of the technological industry. Look at a few of its competitors - in the last fifty years, screens have gone from black-and-white to color; from grainy cathode ray tube screens to high-definition plasma. Computers that used to be housed in gigantic warehouses, using thousands of vacuum tubes, are now overpowered by tiny boxes that sit on every college students’ desk. Processors, found in most modern devices, Dell Vostro 1200 Battery, are built on an atomic scale.

Yet the batteries we use today are still based upon the same technology that was developed by Alessandro Volta over two hundred years ago. They are large, lose electrical charge with time, can leak dangerous acids, and even sometimes explode with misuse. But now, there comes new technology to finally replace the old - the nanobattery.

There are a few projects working with nanobattery technology, and one such endeavor comes from MIT’s Laboratory for Electromagnetic and Electronic Systems (LEES), which is improving on the design of ultracapacitors. TerraDaily writes:

“Today’s ultracapacitors use electrodes made of activated carbon, Dell Vostro 1200 Battery, Dell Vostro 1310 Battery, Dell Vostro 1400 Battery, which is extremely porous and therefore has a very large surface area. However, the pores in the carbon are irregular in size and shape, which reduces efficiency. The vertically aligned nanotubes in the LEES ultracapacitor have a regular shape, and a size that is only several atomic diameters in width. The result is a significantly more effective surface area, which equates to significantly increased storage capacity.”

Unfortunately, most nanobatteries are still too expensive or impractical to be put to everyday use. Initially the technology will probably be used mostly in medical devices, military applications, and emergencies. But as is true with most technology, increases in production will likely result in decreases in cost. Perhaps one day soon the general public will enjoy laptop batteries which can hold a charge long enough to actually allow one to finish write.

Faulty modem software is holding up online traffic for HP notebooks owners.

As of Wednesday, Hp laptop battery owners of Gateway's Solo 3350 and of HP's Pavilion N5000 and Omnibook XE3 notebooks were unable to use their V.90 56kbps modems to get online. Representatives from both companies have said that the problem originates in a modem driver from Fremont, Calif.-based ESS Technology.

The companies wouldn't say how many notebooks are affected. The Solo 3350,HP Pavilion ZT1100 Battery, HP Omnibook XT1000 Battery, HP Omnibook XT1500 Battery which is an ultra-portable, represents a "very small portion of our overall notebook mix," Gateway spokeswoman Donna Kather said Thursday. Both the Pavilion N5000 and Omnibook XE3 are "very popular," an HP representative said.

A driver is software that allows a peripheral to communicate with the operating system on a PC. In this case, a date stamp in the programming code of the faulty driver is "delaying calls and preventing them from making connections," said Bill Wong, vice president of marketing at ESS Technology. Notebooks running Microsoft's Windows 98 Second Edition, Me, 2000 and NT operating systems are affected.

Wong said a "human error" in the code caused the problem.

Although a generic driver that fixes the problem is available on the ESS Web site, Wong recommends that the affected notebook owners wait for a qualified driver from Gateway or HP.

"Our major (manufacturers) will have their new drivers today," Wong said Thursday.

"We're working to qualify a new driver as we speak," Kather said late Thursday morning. "HP Pavilion ZT1100 Battery, A good temporary work around is to reset the date on the notebook to before Feb. 20."

Before it sends out the new driver, Gateway wants to make sure the software will work with its notebook to prevent causing more problems for customers, she said. A date for the new driver has not been set, but the company will make it available on its Web site and will also send floppy disks with the new driver to customers that request them.

HP representatives also recommended that Pavilion N5000 and Omnibook XE3 owners set their clocks back to before Feb. 20 until HP qualifies a new driver that the company will distribute online, as well as on a CD.

HP dumps Evo notebook for tablet PC

Hewlett-Packard plans to discontinue a mini-notebook from its Compaq Evo line in favor of the company's upcoming tablet PC design for businesses.

The company will replace its lightweight Evo Notebook N200 with its upcoming Evo tablet PC,Hp laptop battery a portable computer based on Microsoft's Tablet PC software. HP plans to introduce several new Evo models over the next few months.

Tablet PCs, actively touted by Microsoft as the next wave in portable computing, are small computers that can be "written" on, just as pad of paper, with a pen-like stylus. The Evo tablet PC will be roughly the same size and weight as Evo Notebook N200,HP F2019 Battery, HP F2019A Battery, HP F2019B Battery, a notebook that weighs 2.5 pounds and sells for about $1,500.

The tablet PC, however, is expected to include a faster processor and wireless networking capabilities. It is expected to sell for under $2,000.

"We think that for the (price) premium, customers will step up to the tablet PC," a company representative said.

The Evo tablet PC, announced last June, will be able to transform into a tablet-style PC as well as a traditional notebook. In "tablet mode," the computer screen will lay on top of (and cover) the keyboard. To operate as a notebook, the screen simply swivels around to sit in its proper position.

Incorporating a 1GHz Crusoe TM5800 processor from Transmeta will also allow the upstart chip company to expand into the corporate market.

The Tablet PC is expected to make its official debut at a Nov. 7 event held by Microsoft, sources said. Other manufacturers preparing tablet-style PCs include Acer, NEC, Legend and Toshiba.

HP plows ahead

Separately, HP cut prices on several Evo notebooks this month, according to market research firm ARS. HP F2019 Battery, The company took between $100 and $300 off the price of various models in its Evo N1000, N610 and N800 notebook families.

The Evo N610 is now priced closer to Dell Computer's Latitude C640, ARS said in its report.

HP reorg to split handhelds, notebooks

Hewlett-Packard has given its iPaq handhelds their own business unit, announcing plans Sunday to separate the product teams for its notebooks and handhelds, including the new iPaq hw6900 series.

Dave Rothschild, formerly of Sun Microsystems, Pixo and Netscape, will lead the new business unit reporting to Todd Bradley, executive vice president of HP's Personal Systems Group. Before Sunday, Ted Clark had presided over the development of both notebooks and iPaqs in the Mobility Business Unit, and he will keep control of notebook development in the new organization, HP said in a press release. Four units now make up HP's Personal Systems Group: handhelds, notebooks, desktops and workstations.

HP laptops to sport long-lasting 'Enviro' batteries

Hewlett-Packard early next year will begin offering a new line of "Enviro" batteries for laptop users who want to upgrade to longer-lasting and more sustainably designed batteries.

HP and Boston Power have been testing the Sonata lithium-ion batteries for three years.Hp laptop battery The batteries were designed specifically for laptop use. After three years of use, the batteries will be able to keep 80 percent of their initial charge.

Laptop battery time typically starts to drop significantly after 150 or so charges, or cycles. Boston Power says that its batteries can be charged 1,000 times and get "like new" performance.

An HP representative on Tuesday said that the Sonata batteries will cost between $20 and $30 more than traditional batteries and will be available on some consumer laptop machines. There will be a three-year warranty, and no system changes are required.

The Enviro batteries are marketed as more environmentally friendly for a number of reasons, according to Christina Lampe-Onnerud, founder and CEO of Boston Power.

The company chose not to use any PVC plastic or heavy metals--cadmium, arsenic, or mercury--in the manufacturing process. The batteries can also be recycled, said Lampe-Onnerud, adding that the battery has received a number of "green" certifications.

More simply, Lampe-Onnerud argued that purchasing one product that lasts for at least three years,HP OmniBook 6000 Battery HP F1739A Battery, HP Omnibook XE Battery rather than buying multiple batteries, is more environmentally sustainable and economical.

"Our tests found that 40 percent of consumers over three years have replaced laptop batteries up to five times. If each is $150,HP OmniBook 6000 Battery
that's almost the cost of the whole system," she said. "I think this will change the appetite for sustainable products. Instead of purchasing something expendable, they can have something that lasts."

Boston Power is in discussions with other computer manufacturers, she added without disclosing any names.

The company also plans to release a portable lithium-ion battery for adding charge to cell phones or other gadgets and intends to enter the auto battery market, Lampe-Onnerud said.

Some HP laptops exposed to criminal hacking

On Tuesday, a security researcher disclosed to Bugtraq, a public newsgroup, details of remote execution attacks on some models of Hewlett-Packard laptops. According to the researcher, who is using the name "porkythepig," flaws in HPInfoDLL.dll, one of the ActiveX controls used within the HP Info Center, could allow remote attackers to target the laptop and also execute registry changes on the compromised machine.

As of Wednesday, HP has not offered a response.

The scenario within the disclosure suggests that an attacker could lure a victim to a specially created Web site. When viewing the Web site in Internet Explorer, the ActiveX control within the HP Info Center could be compromised. If the victim uses a browser other than Internet Explorer, HP F1739A Battery, the browser would still call Internet Explorer to handle the ActiveX component on the specially created Web site.

Once a machine is compromised, an attacker could then install malware, change registry information in preparation for a more sophisticated attack, use the machine in a denial-of-service attack on itself or another target, or steal sensitive data from documents on the compromised machine.

A list of potentially vulnerable HP laptop models can be found in the full disclosure posted on BugTraq. To see whether your particular HP laptop is vulnerable, the researcher also provided a Web site (use this link at your own risk).

Hewlett-Packard has cut prices on its notebook PCs as much as 25 percent as it makes way for new models.

Hewlett-Packard (HP) today dropped prices by as much as 25 percent on several feature-rich notebooks boasting large, 14-inch LCD screens and Pentium II processors.

The HP Omnibook 7100 received the largest price cut of 25 percent. This is a relatively hefty "desktop replacement" notebook that is now expected to sell for about $3,199. It comes with an Intel Pentium II 266-MHz processor, an 8.1GB hard drive, a 14.1 inch active-matrix LCD, and a module that combines a CD-ROM drive and a floppy drive.

HP will trim its notebook lines to three, according to Glenn Kuo,HP OmniBook 6000 Battery HP F1739A Battery, HP Omnibook XE Battery product manager for the HP mobile computing division, in a recent statement, and the 7100 will start to disappear, he said.

The slim-design, lightweight OmniBook 4150 was reduced in price by 17 percent. HP Omnibook XE Battery This will sell now for $3,399. It includes a Pentium II 300-MHz processor, a 6.4GB hard drive, 14.1-inch screen, and a CD-ROM drive.

HP recently introduced new notebooks based on the just-released 366-MHz Pentium II processor.

The company also cut prices on accessories. A DVD drive, for example, was slashed 60 percent and now sells for about $175. A port replicator was cut 44 percent and will now sell for an estimated $55. A port replicator is a type of docking device which is already connected to a company network and to devices like a mouse or monitor, thus allowing users to simply plug in their portable computers to start working.
